About the Counsellor:
Laurel Tien is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). With a background of over 30 years in the field of mental health in community, hospital, emergency room, and teaching at the postsecondary level. Laurel transitioned to psychotherapy in 2021, driven by her interest in the natural human ability for inner healing.
Philosophy:
Laurel’s core philosophy is holding space for illumination and personal growth. Laurel comes to the practice of counselling with a passion for wellness and transformative, life-long learning. Her Ph.D. in the Transformative Studies program at California Institute of Integral Studies focused on privileging emergence and relational learning as generative collective wisdom. Her beliefs about diversity and inclusion are couched in this participatory framework.
Therapeutic Approach:
Laurel provides individual, family and couples counselling. Her main theoretical orientations are existential-humanistic and post-modernist/constructivist, but in practice she employs a wide range of theories and techniques that can be tailored to each individual’s situation. Laurel has received specific training and completed professional development in all of the therapeutic modalities she uses: somatic eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), healthy sexuality, systems work, and psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy/integration.
