About the Counsellor:

Tara McCaffery (she/her) is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), Certified Meditation Instructor, and Trauma-Informed Yoga Facilitator with a deep commitment to holistic wellness and client-centred therapy. With a Master’s in Counselling Psychology from Athabasca University and a BA in Psychology from the University of Victoria, Tara brings over 10 years of experience supporting individuals through various life challenges. Her approach integrates multiple therapeutic modalities, fostering a supportive environment where clients can explore and grow.

Philosophy:

Tara believes in a holistic approach to therapy, addressing mental, emotional, and physical well-being. She values connection, lifelong learning, and genuineness in her practice. Tara is dedicated to cultivating a therapeutic alliance built on rapport, trust, respect, and collaboration, which she sees as essential for successful therapy outcomes. Her approach is client-centred, tailoring therapy to individual needs and preferences.

Therapeutic Approach:

Tara’s therapeutic toolbox includes cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), mindfulness, exposure response therapy, narrative therapy, meditation instruction, somatic embodiment regulation strategies, and specialty training in San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety. She is also skilled in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) treatment and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Tara adapts her approach to fit each client’s personality and specific challenges, integrating talk therapy with somatic therapy techniques.

Tara has extensive experience across diverse settings, including private practice, school districts, provincial prisons, non-profit organizations, First Nations communities, and as a Regional Educator for the BC Schizophrenia Society. She is particularly passionate about supporting clients in navigating relationships, enhancing identity cohesion, and integrating mindfulness and somatic practices into their therapeutic journey. Tara’s work is guided by a deep understanding of trauma-informed care and a commitment to promoting wellness through compassionate and evidence-based interventions. Her holistic approach allows her to apply a variety of modalities, including meditation and trauma-informed yoga, to create a comprehensive therapeutic experience for her clients.
